Holy MGB Batman!.....
Back to reality today and back to working on the B. Ever since I'd had the car I'd noticed something "going on" under the off side bottom corner of the windscreen rubber. It always felt a bit "bumpy". As I had to strip & re-paint the wings and scuttle I thought I might as well investigate what was going on there. Above, here I've taken out the windscreen to investigate, I just thought I'd find some light rust that would be easy to deal with......
..... but this was the reality! Holy Tin Worm Batman! Now when I bought the car the paint in this area was a bit bubbly and the dealer I bought the car from assured me this would be dealt with and was "perfectly normal" for MGB's. So he had it re-sprayed in that area (Diary Page 16) along with some bubbles on the O/S front wing. Not to a high standard if you recall. I ended up having to re do the area myself. I made a few enquiries in the MG Owners Club forum and it turns out this is a regular place for GT's to rust, I wonder why the dealer didn't know that...... I made a phone call to Mark at Fisher Services and emailed him a few pictures of the affected area, he graciously pointed me in the right direction as to the repairs. While I was at it I asked him about the bubbling that keeps appearing on the top of the O/S front wing and why it's reappeared around the headlamp despite the repair last year. Again, I was told that it needed investigation as there was definitely something under the paint causing it to happen. So...
,
.... off came the wings... They weren't that difficult to remove, one of the captive nuts on the N/S wing sheared off and had to be cut through but other than that it was pretty easy. I was very relieved to find underneath was rock solid, a bit of surface rust but nothing to write home about. phew...
Stripping the paint off of the wing. At first I used Nitromors but that was a slow process and I wanted to speed it up a bit. So I bought a sanding disc for my angle grinder and hey presto much quicker! This is the nearside wing, no rust on it other than.....
... the area that I thought I had repaired last year. Actually all I'd done last year was clean off the rust on the front as I couldn't get to the rear of the headlamp surround mount. Now I could. Once I got the angle grinder on it I managed to grind off all of the rust until there wasn't anything left, of the rust that is! Now I turned my attention to the other wing....
